No-exam life insurance

Who qualifies for fast-track underwriting, how the process operates, and what happens if you don't qualify.

Many carriers now provide accelerated underwriting: for applicants in certain age brackets and coverage ranges, they make decisions from the application, pharmacy records, driving records and other data—no paramedical exam required. Approvals sometimes come the same business day. This website shows whether an exam is required, conditional, or unnecessary for each quote.

What it changes

Skipping the exam doesn't skip the review. Your responses are verified, and a policy issued based on false information can be challenged within the first two years. If underwriting raises concerns, the carrier may order an exam or tests anyway; you choose whether to proceed.

Who tends to qualify

Typically individuals under around 60, applying for coverage up to the carrier's accelerated limit, without significant health issues and without tobacco use in the last 12 months or longer. Carriers may accept recent medical tests from your doctor instead of conducting their own exam.

When an exam is necessary, it's typically a 20 to 30-minute appointment with a nurse in your home or workplace in the local region, at no expense to you. For many applicants, exam results can actually improve your rate classification, so it's not necessarily a drawback.
