Downtown Hollister and the adjoining Monterey Street Historic District were officially designated by the City of Hollister in 1992 as protected historic areas. The districts contain Victorian-era architecture and buildings from the early 1900s that reflect the city's origins as a sheep-ranching settlement founded by Colonel W.W. Hollister in 1872. The city maintains detailed inventories and walking tour guides that document the history and significance of each property.

The city's historic preservation program uses the Secretary of the Interior's Guidelines for the Treatment of Historic Properties to guide restoration and renovation. Property owners undertaking work on designated historic homes can access resources and evaluations to ensure their improvements maintain the historic character. These conservation efforts have kept the downtown core intact even as Hollister has tripled in population over four decades.

A neighborhood with preserved character and continuity offers families something stability often lacks in rapidly growing areas: a sense of place for their children to know. Term life insurance that protects a household's mortgage and its ability to stay rooted in such a community is the practical complement to that investment.
